What are the 9 types of tweets or status updates?

How to use Twitter effectively We asked some of the top internet marketers in the world to differentiate the subtle differences in tweets that they use every day and to explain what their value is and how to best use them.

1.) Personal Present Tweet: “Happy New Year everybody!” This tweet is used to talk about what one is doing in the present and recent past. “Just saw Avatar. What a cool movie.”This helps create a real personal relationship with your friends and followers. Many athletes and celebrities use this to great success.

2.) The information question Tweet: “Does anyone have an opinion about the new Droid phone vs. the iphone?” This tweet can be useful for getting information especially involving technology, software, marketing and other questions.

3.) The question answer Tweet: “I have both phones. There are 3 advantages for the Droid, the GPS, multi aps at same time &…” This tweet can be great for two things: (1) it is direct reply to a question tweet, which is much appreciated from the person asking the question; (2) this person’s followers can see your reply and it is easy to gain organic followers by being helpful and informative on the web.

4.) The informational article or video Tweet: “Check out this great article on creating social media marketing guidelines in the office http://etc…com” or “Have you seen this video explaining the risks of identity theft http://etc…com” This type of tweet is valuable for growing your followers organically and for being seen as an expert in certain areas. It also shows you care about the subject and enjoy passing on knowledge. It is important that the information be valid, up to date and without a prevalent marketing spin attached to it.

5.) Great quotes Tweet: “Only a life lived in the service to others is worth living.” Albert Einstein. These are fun tweets that people love. It shows a lot about your character and that you are willing to share something that you care about. These will get retweeted frequently which will help grow one’s followers. A couple points to note: first, make sure that the quote is not too large ( i.e. under 140 characters) and, second, if you use AY’s quotes’ section, which we highly recommend, make sure you read the quotes and agree with them before you send them.

6.) Funny quotes or videos Tweet: “42.7 percent of all statistics are made up on the spot” will make people smile and laugh and once again will get retweeted and grow your followers. Everyone needs to laugh. Humor is of vital importance in our opinion and one funny one liner or a link to a funny video can make someone’s hour, day or week. This is another way to create a stronger relationship with one’s followers. Two points of note: first make sure, I mean make sure, that whatever the joke is about that it will not be offensive to a group of people, especially regarding sex, religion or politics. Second make sure the number of characters is under 140.

7.) The marketing Tweet: “Check out what experts are calling the opportunity of the century! http://marketingspin.com One can live of die by the marketing tweet. They can drive massive traffic and make one’s company plenty of money and build one’s customer base. Or they can get you blacklisted and unfollowed faster than just about anything. We have found that the main key to marketing tweets has to do with the frequency of marketing tweets. By sending out many more informational and personal tweets in between marketing tweets one can accomplish the two main points of social media marketing. The first point is to create relationships and express the appearance of being an expert and the second is to drive traffic to one’s site and make sales. If one sends out marketing tweet after marketing tweet, there will be consequences, none of which are positive. Being unfollowed and labeled a spammer can kill ones social media marketing credibility.

8.) The retweet: “RT @Automaticallyu 42.7 percent of all statistics are made up on the spot” is a powerful tool for making friends and helping others receive new organic followers. With twitter being connected directly with Google, retweets will increase in value. There is nothing more people appreciate on social media sites than being retweeted or #ff. This type of altruistic tweet will earn you many friends and give you instant karma and we highly recommend this practice.

9.) The hashtag tweet: #FF# @celnicker, @automaticallyu, @seoautomation, @etc… is an example of the hashtag. There are many hashtags out there about many topics. To learn more about hashtags we recommend looking them up on Google or on twitter. The #FF stands for friends follow or follow Friday. It has a few meanings. Either way it is a special tweet similar to the retweet, in that it is altruistic. By sending out a #ff, you are sending out a shout to twitter users that you are recommending to your followers to follow as well. It will be noticed. This is a more advanced practice that will produce results.

Great list of tweets.

If you are not intent on building real relationships with people by delivering educational and personal information you will eventually be blacklisted. People don’t want to be spammed with “pitches”.

It is good to see those different types of tweets all on the same page. It helps you to determine what kind you mind you might be doing most of the time and helps you realize that you need to change it up some and not be so predictable.

We couldn’t agree more with Frank. “We have found that the main key to marketing tweets has to do with the frequency of marketing tweets.” This means that the key to maintain relationships is to not over market marketing tweets. We believe in an 8 to 1 ratio, 8 [pieces of information to every marketing piece. We appreciate your honest remarks and go out of our way to share anyone’s educated ideas about social media marketing on our blog.

Wow, thank you for sharing the information about Tweets. This is a good addition to tips in Twitter Marketing. I usually ask my site visitors to retweet my posts when they find it highly valuable. Now there’s another way for me to do it without sounding monotonous.

Thanks again,
Elmar
